Table E 6 and E7 classifies adult women and men living in rural and urban areas according to their level of education. In West Bengal about 59 and 26 per cent of rural and urban women respectively remained illiterate till the mid-1990s. Though illiteracy was more pervasive in the neighbouring states of Orissa and Bihar, it was less pronounced at the all-India level as compared to West Bengal. Among rural women in West Bengal only about two per cent had education up to the secondary level and less that one per cent were graduates; for urban women these proportion were about 11 and 8 per cent respectively.
